Spence aims for three points against Dons
Dundee’s Lewis Spence is looking for the same sort of performance his side produced in the second half against St Mirren when they play Aberdeen on Saturday – but hopefully this time with a different outcome.
The Dark Blues took the game by the scruff of the neck after the break at Paisley last weekend but could not turn their dominance into points with Sofien Moussa missing a penalty and then goalie Jack Hamilton gifting St Mirren their winner.
Spence knows just how tough it will be again this weekend against a Dons side that drew with Rangers at Pittodrie on Sunday after going toe to toe three days before in the Europa League with English Premier League side Burnley.
However, the 22-year-old midfielder is confident Dundee can pick up all three points against Derek McInnes’s side.
Spence said: “It is a massive game this weekend against Aberdeen.
“They’re a really good team and did very well against Burnley.
“So it’ll be tough but we are still confident of beating anybody.
“When we play like we did for much of the second half at St Mirren, we can compete with most teams in the league.
“We just need to be ruthless.” That lack of a killer instinct cost Dundee dear against St Mirren.
For Spence is was an all-toofamiliar tale of woe and he insists his side have to eradicate the failings and quickly. He added: “It’s the same old, same old with us.
“We came out flying in the second half and get a penalty.
“Sofien usually puts them away but doesn’t and then a freak mistake at the end just sums it up.
“We need to get that sorted fast because it was just a repeat of last season and we don’t want that.
“It’s still really early but it could become a habit and we don’t want that.
“In the second half we absolutely battered them but came away with nothing.
“When you are on top like that, you have to put one away.
“We should have won but how many times did we say that last season?
“We need to be more ruthless in front of goal and when we’re on top like that. We need to bury teams and punish them.”
Meanwhile, Dundee yesterday signed French striker Cliff Bironda with the 19-year-old joining Jimmy Boyle’s reserve squad, subject to international clearance.
