Australian golfer Jarrod Lyle loses long battle with cancer at age of 36

-

Australian golfer Jarrod Lyle has died aged 36 following a battle with cancer.

The sportsman had previously overcome acute myeloid leukaemia in 1998 and 2012 but tragically announced its return last year.

Lyle, who was born in Shepparton, Victoria, died after spending his final days with family and friends. He is survived by his wife Briony and daughters Lusi, six, and Jemma, two.

Briony issued a family statement, which said: “He asked that I provide a simple message: ‘Thanks for your support, it meant the world. My time was short, but if I’ve helped people think and act on behalf of those families who suffer through cancer, hopefully it wasn’t wasted.’

“Lusi, Jemma and I are filled with grief and now must confront our lives without the greatest husband and father we could ever have wished for.”

Lyle, once ranked 142nd in the world, won twice on the Nationwide Tour in 2008. The father of two also played a number of seasons on the PGA Tour. His best finish saw him tied in 4th place in the 2012 Northern Trust Open.

Lyle began golfing at the age of six when he caddied for his father before turning professional in 2004. He last competed in 2017 and began treatment for the reoccuring cancer in July.
