Old ‘Muchty on map

-

Muchty Heritage Group, a small, informal group has been busy working on a couple of projects. Old ‘Muchty Exhibition 2018 is open each weekend this month in the church building.

This year the star of the show is a recently discovered map of the town, dated 1883. It is quite unique and the group have put together its history. This background makes interesting reading and several parts of the exhibition are based on detail taken from the map.

As well as the map, there are the popular “then and now” photographs. There is a display of old farming tools and blacksmithing items with photographs of Muchty “smiddies” as well as the display from John White and Son. Film from the 1930s onwards show pageant days, school sports, wartime practice drills etc.

The Auchtermuchty Co-operative plays a large part in this exhibition.

It is open on Saturdays from 10am to 4pm and on Sundays from 1pm to 4pm. Entry is free.

The other project is a free leaflet which takes you on a walking tour of Auchtermuchty taking in the older parts of the town, sharing snippets of history and local knowledge. It is available at the exhibition and in local shops, the community centre and the library.

The group working on these projects are all “bus pass holders” they tell me. “It would be great to add to the numbers in the group and even better to have a span of age groups and talents,” they say.

If anyone is interested in helping, please contact Brian Slattery on 07742 555314.
