Johanna Konta was beaten 6-3 6-4 by defending champion Elina Svitolina in her second match of the day at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

The British number one had returned to beat two-time champion Victoria Azarenka in a match that was halted by rain on Wednesday.

Konta led 6-3 3-0 when play was stopped overnight, and took just four games to seal a meeting with world number five Svitolina.

However, the world number 43, had few answers against the Ukrainian, who booked her place in the quarter-finals in 85 minutes.

World number one Simona Halep also returned yesterday to deny Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova a shock second round victory.

Halep came from a break down in the final set to win 7-6 (9-7) 4-6 7-5.

Halep said: “It was a great match, a great fight. She played unbelievable and was fighting until the end.

“I won the match, and I’m really happy that I could fight until the end. With this support, it’s impossible to give up.” Halep will next play Venus Williams. The American 13th seed Williams saw off Sorana Cirstea of Romania 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 to move into the third round.

Unseeded Aryna Sabalenka knocked out former world number one Caroline Wozniacki to reach the third round after saving three match points.

The Belarussian came through 5-7 6-2 7-6 (7-4) in two and a half hours.

In the men’s event in Toronto Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic saw his bid for a fifth Rogers Cup ended by a shock third round defeat by Greek teenager Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Tsitipas, who will be 20 on Sunday, beat the 13-time Grand Slam champion 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 in two hours 18 minutes.

The world number 27 is through to the first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 quarter-final of his career.

Kevin Anderson and Grigor Dimitrov are also through to the last eight.

South African Anderson, who Djokovic beat in last month’s Wimbledon final, saw off Belarus’s Ilya Ivashka 7-5 6-3.

Dimitrov beat Frances Tiafoe of the United States 7-6 (7-1) 3-6 7-6 (7-4).
