Bin collections set to change for 60,000 houses in west Fife

- LEEZA CLARK

Almost 60,000 households across Fife will see a change to bin collections from September 17.

Dunfermline, Kincardine, Rosyth, Dalgety Bay, Inverkeithing, Lochgelly, Cowdenbeath, Kelty, Aberdour and other west Fife villages will be affected by changes to routes and the items which can be recycled in certain bins.

The move will be followed by changes to east and central Fife.

Waste operations team manager Shaun Kenyon said existing rounds had been in place for a number of years, and had remained unchanged through budget cuts and new home developments, but a growth in housing has led to pressure on some routes.

“We appreciate that changing the collection days may be an inconvenience in the short term, but the change will make the service more efficient, reducing travel time and make collection routes more streamlined,” he said.

The council is urging residents to check their new bin collection dates by visiting fifedirect.org.uk/ bincalendar

Printed calendars are no longer delivered in an effort to save cash and be greener but residents can sign up for free email alerts.

Householders who need a bin calendar in an alternative format can call 03451 550022.

Some homes in west Fife may face a longer wait for their bins to be emptied during the transition.

Excess waste for green and grey bins can be put out next to these bins for collection between September 17 and 28.

A maximum of two bags/ bundles can be left per uplift.

The content of green and grey recycling bins will also change on September 17.

Polystyrene, plastic bags and films and plastic wrappers will not be suitable for the green bin, but should go into the blue bin.

Drinks and food cartons will be recycled in the green bin.
