Thieves scent back to jail after stealing perfume from store

-

Two men have been jailed following separate thefts of perfume from a store in Dunfermline.

Gavin Simm, 25, of the James Bank hostel, James Street, is back behind bars after appearing from custody at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He admitted stealing a quantity of fragrances from Debenhams in the Kingsgate Centre on August 25.

The court heard Simm is currently subject to a payback order imposed in March.

Depute fiscal Azrah Yousaf said Simm had committed a clearly “opportunistic” crime.

“He was spotted stealing and stopped just outside the store,” she said.

“He has a record littered with crimes of dishonesty.”

The depute added that the goods stolen were valued at £104.50, although there was full recovery of the items taken.

Sheriff Charles MacNair called for background reports and Simm was remanded in custody until sentencing on September 20.

Meanwhile, a 47-year-old man has also been sent back to jail after being caught stealing three bottles of perfume worth £194 from the same store, Debenhams, in Dunfermline.

Steven Carruthers, of Robert Smith Court, Lumphinnans, appeared from custody at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He admitted that on August 26 at Debenhams he stole a quantity of fragrance.

Defence solicitor Alexander Flett said his client had been released from a six-month jail term for shoplifting two weeks before his latest offence.

“He had no income which led to the theft here,” he added.

Sheriff Chris Shead jailed Carruthers for four months for the offence.
