Gowfers survive Tayport comeback; Lochee too good for hosts

- PETER RUNDO

Broughty Athletic notched up their fifth straight win as they came from behind to defeat a makeshift Glenrothes side in the DJ Laing East Region Cup second round at Whitton Park on Saturday.

Connor Schiavone gave the Fifers the lead after a goalless first half but Paul McLellan levelled and Liam McArtney netted the winner.

Lochee United eased their way into the third round with a 4-0 win away to Fauldhouse United.

Connor Birse put United ahead after 20 minutes, then a quickfire double in the final five minutes of the half from Garry Kenneth and Stephen McNally effectively ended it as a contest.

Birse added a fourth two minutes after the restart and thereafter manager George Shields’ men ran down the clock to a fifth straight win in imperious fashion.

Laing Park produced a game of two halves as Carnoustie edged out Tayport 3-2 despite the visitors’ second half fightback.

The hosts were three up at the break thanks to goals from Jamie McCabe, Mark Smith and Baily Steel.

Port hit back through Dale Robertson before the Gowfers had Ewan Buggins red-carded. Ryan Suttie reduced the leeway 10 minutes from time but the hosts held on to go through.

East Craigie’s unbeaten run was ended by Luncarty whose 4-1 victory at Craigie Park maintained their unbeaten record.

Goals from Richard Doig and Tony Holt fired the Bleachers in front before Ben Mooney pulled one back.

Doig added his second early in the second half with Kieran Donald grabbing the fourth.

There were no frills about Kirrie Thistle’s 3-2 victory at Lochore Welfare.

They had to come from behind twice before edging out their South League hosts, who led thanks to Joe Kinninmonth’s opener with Stuart McKenna equalising.

Kinninmonth restored the lead but Dale Reid levelled before the break.

In the second half, Welfare missed a penalty and were reduced to 10 men before Reid’s second with minutes left took Thistle through.

It was an afternoon to forget for Thornton who weren’t at the races as they tumbled out of the cup 3-1 against Livingston United. There were also second round victories for Kirkcakdy YM, Harthill and Rosyth, who thumped Coupar Angus 12-1.

In the first round North End were 2-0 winners at home to Blairgowrie thanks to Gary Sutherland strikes in each half. The Dokens will now be at home to Lochgelly Albert. Mike Fotheringham and Dean Hardie were on target for the hosts.

Forfar West End were 3-1 winners at Violet.

A Jamie Montgomery goal set the visitors on a victory course with second half goals from Matt Ramsay and Graeme Hart putting the issue beyond doubt.

Sean Tucker grabbed a consolation goal 15 minutes from time.

Lochee Harp were on the wrong end of a nine-goal thriller with West Calder at Downfield Park. Lewis Young, Sam McDonald, Lloyd Young – plus an own goal – netted for Harp.

Downfield proved too strong for Arbroath Vics with a 4-2 win at Ogilvy Park to book a second round date with Kennoway Star Hearts. Paul Blackwood hit a double, while Bryan Duell and Dale Davidson also counted for the Spiders.

Other first-round victors were Scone Thistle, who put six past Stoneyburn, and Kinnoull, 3-0 winners over Armadale Thistle.

In the only North League game played on Saturday, Brechin Vics’ 5-2 home win over Forfar Albion made it back-to-back victories, with 12 goals scored in the process. Aaron Shepherd, Rikki Gillespie, Bruce Hearn and Ewan Duff were the home side’s scorers.
