An interesting point was involved in an action at Forfar Sheriff Court. The pursuers were Arthur and Annie Jarron, famers, Mains of Melgund, Aberlemno, and they sued Charles Lindsay, cattle dealer, Letham for £290 17s 8d as balance due in connection with a sale of turnips by them to defender for consumption by his cattle. Defender counter claimed saying the whole of the turnips were not supplied to his cattle. The sheriff’s finding is that the shaws of the turnips sold were included in the sale.

If jute merchants continue to store jute in unsuitable premises, they must be prepared to accept the building and the contents as a total loss in the event of fire. Firemen’s lives will not be jeopardised saving them. This advice has been given to jute merchants by Firemaster John Jackson of the Angus Fire Brigade. He suggested that before premises were used for jute storage they should be seen by insurance people as well as by the fire brigade and approved. That way no misunderstanding could arise.

Bosnian refugees will be wearing the latest fashion shoes and boots this winter. And relief agencies are sure they will be unconcerned that the footwear is fake. Three thousand pairs of counterfeit Doc Martens boots and shoes were recovered after a raid in Hong Kong and the R. Griggs Group, which manufactures the real Doc Martens, has donated them to Oxfam. Stephen Griggs said: “We felt that by donating the shoes to charity, at least some good could come out of a major criminal activity.”

A new chapter in book borrowing has begun in Kinghorn. The village library was officially reopened yesterday, after it was one of several closed to cut costs by Fife CulturalTrust. Volunteer group Kinghorn Library Renewed has taken over a lease for the building and, as well as lending books, is to hold community events. At its launch day, villagers came to see its greatly enhanced stock of more than 6,000 books and redecorated premises. More volunteers are being sought.
