New street name selected to commemorate former school

A new street in Glenrothes is to be named after a former town primary school.

Members of Fife Council’s Glenrothes area committee have agreed to name the route School Drive.

The name was chosen to reflect its location on the site of the old Tanshall Primary, which closed three years ago.

The local Macedonia Action Group had originally recommended Findhorn Drive but, after reading a report to committee, the group’s chairman Bob Hutchison contacted local councillors earlier this week to confirm his members’ support for School Drive.

The decision was welcomed by depute provost and local SNP councillor Julie Ford, who moved the suggestion to recognise the former school and the heritage of the local area.

“I am delighted that this new street will be called School Drive,” she said.

“Our local community will always hold fond memories of Tanshall Primary School – and it is therefore only right to ensure this memory is enshrined within the local area for ever.”

Fellow SNP councillor Craig Walker echoed her comments, adding: “I, along with the local community, was pleased to support Councillor Ford’s suggestion of School Drive.

“I remember the sadness felt by many at the final Tanshall Primary School summer fete in 2015, so I think it is only right to commemorate the many years this school served our community.”

Tanshall Primary closed in July 2015 to make way for new housing.

The new street name was required for the road serving the Fife Council development at land to the east of Cullen Drive.

Officials had recommended the Findhorn Drive suggestion following a consultation with locals.
