Dundee tramway service is causing the City Fathers some anxiety. The Board of Trade are calling upon all tramway overseers to make arrangements for a 15 per cent reduction in coal consumption. It was one thing to make a request of this kind; it is another thing to carry it into effect without the service practically disappearing. Inasmuch as Sunday tram facilities are of comparatively recent date, it was but natural to have a suggestion in the direction of reverting to a six day service.

A retired Perth school teacher, Mr John MacLeod, of 15 Moncrieffe Terrace, celebrates his 101st birthday today. A widower since 1946, Mr MacLeod has been a patient at Burghmuir Hospital since he had a hernia operation two months ago. That’s not to say he is feeling unwell. “I feel marvellous,” he said. A small party will be held today with only his family present. This is in marked contrast to his 100th birthday last year when Provost DK Thomson called at his house to congratulate him.

Chancellor Kenneth Clarke warned of unpopular cuts to pay for improved services in health, education and law enforcement in a hawkish speech to the Scottish CBI in Glasgow last night. Prime Minister John Major backed Mr Clarke in his resolve to adhere to the £254 billion public spending ceiling agreed by the Cabinet last year. He said: “The Chancellor set out the matter quite clearly.”

A Perth man is keen to stir interest in croquet after being surprised to find there are no clubs in the area to cater for the sport. Roy Henderson, 67, of Viewlands Road, said he has six mallets to share, hoops and all the other kit required, but nowhere to play locally and no one to play the game with. He said his interest in croquet began when he was based in Aberdeen and said he is surprised by the lack of clubs associated with the game in Perth and Kinross. Finding an old set boosted him into action.
