Derby win sees Broughty keep pressure on Lochee

Former Gowfer returns to haunt Laing Parkers

- MARK JOHNSTON

Broughty Athletic kept the pressure on Lochee United at the top of the Super league following a hard-fought 2-1 win at Carnoustie.

The visitors dominated the first half and deservedly led at half-time through a Fraser Smith goal.

Carnoustie equalised within four minutes of the restart when Jamie McCabe fired home from just inside the box and when Ryan Blair was sent off for a second yellow card just after the hour it looked like the Gowfers would go on to win the game.

However, a Broughty counter with 10 minutes remaining saw Derryn Kesson find former Gowfer Marc Scott and he found the corner to take the points.

Forfar West End were rampant at home to Glenrothes, running out emphatic 6-0 winners.

Craig Batchelor put West End in front after just six minutes and Michael McIlravey made it 2-0 four minutes later.

The former Carnoustie and Lochee forward made it 3-0 10 minutes before the break and there was still time for Batchelor to make it four before halftime.

Jamie Montgomery made it five just after the hour before Batchelor completed his hat-trick with his side’s sixth on 68 minutes.

Lochee United recovered from the shock of a sixth-minute opener from Downfield at Thomson Park to win the Dundee derby 5-1.

Paul Blackwood scored that opener for the visitors but Craig Smith levelled on 14 minutes. Connor Birse then put United in front three minutes later.

Three minutes after half time Dougie Cameron made it 3-1 and then with 15 minutes to go Birse made it four. The fifth goal came with 10 minutes remaining when Jamie Reid put the icing on the cake for Lochee.

Tayport put the disappointment of defeat in the East Region Cup to Carnoustie behind them to beat Fauldhouse United 4-1 at the Canniepairt.

Kirrie Thistle came from behind to lead 2-1 with five minutes remaining at Thornton Hibs but left Fife with nothing from a 3-1 defeat.

Garry Thompson put Thornton in front on 17 minutes but Greg Fairweather equalised on the half hour.

Sean McVicar’s 75th minute goal for Kirrie looked to have won the game until Thompson equalised on 87 minutes and then, in stoppage time, Nathan Kiristino hit the Hibs winner.

Blair Stephen scored four times for Brechin Vics as they beat Coupar Angus 7-4 at Victoria Park. Ewan Duff helped with a brace and Rikki Gillespie scored the other.

Vics led 7-1 when they were reduced to 10 men when Gordon Ramsay was harshly sent off and that allowed Coupar Angus to pull three goals back but it was never going to be enough. Scorers for the visitors were Lee Maloney with a brace alongside strikes from Steven Florence and Brandon Calderwood.

Dundee North End won the Dundee Derby at Craigie Park, defeating rivals East Craigie 2-1.

Gary Sutherland put North End in front on 23 minutes and Ryan Rigden made it two with 17 minutes remaining

East Craigie pulled a goal back in the last minute through Finlay Baird but it was no more than a consolation.

Arbroath Vics took their first point of the season at Dundee Violet but will be gutted to throw away a 2-0 lead.

Michael Fotheringham put Vics in front on 20 minutes and Cammy Mooney made it 2-0 just before half-time

The visitors looked to be on their way to three points until a penalty, converted by Sean Tucker on 83 minutes, got the home-side back in it and Kamil Kadela scored the equaliser in added time.

Forfar Albion were a little unlucky to lose 2-1 at home to Kinnoull at Guthrie Park. Ryan Murphy was on target for Albion.

Lochee Harp are just a point behind the top two after a 3-1 win at home to Scone Thistle. Lloyd Young put Harp in front on 24 minutes and they led by that goal at half-time.

Scone were level within three minutes of the restart, thanks to a Sean Whitworth goal, but parity lasted just two minutes before Liam Roddy put Harp back in front. Sam McDonald made sure of all three points with a third for Harp with eight minutes left.

Montrose Roselea took the train to Nairn St Ninians and returned with all three points from a convincing 4-0 win that saw James Collier’s side top the North Region Super League table for the first time.

Roselea led 3-0 at the break thanks to an own goal alongside strikes from Stephen Greig and Murray Soutar.

Greig’s second came from a penalty on the hour-mark.
