Three fabulous acts give city a real night to remember

- Paul Malik

Arguably, any one of last night’s acts could have headlined Slessor Gardens. KT introduced herself to the thousands watching as “St Andrews’ answer to Ed Sheeran, even though I’m old enough to be his mum” and proceeded to play a solo gig with no back-up band.

Aided by a loop machine and a number of samplers, she joked with the audience in-between the songs in a hit-filled set, her natural humour and affinity for the city coming through in equal measure.

Opening concerts in daylight will always be difficult, but Tunstall and the crowd didn’t care a jot.

She even threw in an impressive cover of the late Tom Petty’s Won’t Back Down, before a sing-along rendition of Suddenly I See.

Chrissie Hynde epitomises cool and The Pretenders threw themselves through a headline set, hit after hit, including I’ll Stand By You and Don’t Get Me Wrong.

At one point Hynde looked towards the V&A and said she’ll be walking round the city tomorrow morning in a pair of Groucho Marx sunglasses – before proclaiming a dislike of a certain building under construction across from Kengo Kuma’s masterpiece.

When Jim Kerr, Ged Grimes, Charlie Burchill and co strutted on to the stage, it became apparent, for the first time proper, that Slessor Gardens is a bona fide large-scale concert venue.

Jim Kerr told the crowd it was a delight to play in Dundee when Dundee is the place to be, but let them in on a little secret – “it always has been”.
