RRS Discovery

The first ship to be built for scientific research is a neighbour of the V&A at the city’s waterfront. Constructed in Dundee, she journeyed to the Antarctic, carrying Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton on their successful Discovery expedition. Now an awardwinning attraction and museum, visitors can explore on board and learn about life on the ocean waves.

Slessor Gardens

Opposite the V&A, Slessor Gardens is the main central parkland area at the city’s central waterfront. Visit the pavilion designed by V&A architect Kengo Kuma. Inspired by a traditional Japanese Kibako (wooden box), with wood stacked like a structure of firewood logs, it is composed of various lengths and diameters of tree trunks sourced from fallen trees at Templeton Woods on the outskirts of Dundee.

Discovery Walk

Also located at Slessor Gardens is a relaxed and informative space that showcases what Dundee has offered to the world. Plaques recognise the city’s most influential figures such as biologist D’Arcy Thompson and philanthropist Mary Ann Baxter. They honour the pioneering spirit of those whose scientific and social achievements have helped make Dundee and the wider world a better place.

Dundee Contemporary Arts

One of the central figures of Dundee’s cultural scene, the gallery exhibits some of the finest contemporary art from around the country and beyond. A two-screen cinema shows a mix of blockbusters and art house movies, while Jute Café serves up good food all day. The current exhibitions are Santiago Sierra’s Black Flag and Mike Kelley’s Mobile Homestead.

Dundee Science Centre

A great day out for the entire family, it’s the perfect place to take children with an inquiring mind. Providing an interactive, hands-on approach to learning about the world around us, permanent exhibitions include Medical Marvels, which allows visitors to enter a medical theatre and explore modern technology in comparison with traditional surgery. The Infusion coffee shop is also there for refuelling.
