Refurbishment on the horizon for Bruce Embankment toilets

-

A prominent public toilet block in St Andrews is in line for a sixfigure revamp.

Members of the north-east Fife area committee are being urged to agree to allocate £100,000 towards the cost of refurbishing the Bruce Embankment public toilets when they meet today.

The total cost of the project is likely to amount to nearly £400,000. Project leaders also want to install a special Changing Places room for people with mobility problems.

The site has been identified by the St Andrews Town Group, which was formed in December to bring together key local organisations, after concerns were raised about the state of the public toilets throughout St Andrews.

Funding has already been identified for a full refurbishment of toilets in the harbour area in 2019-20.

The Bruce Embankment block is situated at the entrance to the main car park for St Andrews and next to Fife Coastal Path and the Golf Museum, making it an important site for visitors.

A report to Fife councillors today will explain that the project could cost between £280,750 and £398,250.

Plans are being drawn up for a new roof, a change in layout and the replacement of the disabled toilet with a Changing Places room.

The existing office will be replaced. The plans also include vending machines, a tourism kiosk, a full refurbishment of all sanitaryware and internal fixtures and fittings, rewiring and a new heating system.

Fife Council is being asked to provide match funding for the project so the St Andrews Town Group can approach other potential partners.
