The Rev R Cleghorn Thomson, Ladyburn Parish Church, Greenock, was last night elected to the pastorship at Wallacetown Parish Church, Dundee, in succession of the Rev JS Robertson who transferred to Montrose. Voting took place yesterday, and the only name before the congregation was that of Mr Thomson. A native of Uddingston, he graduated at Glasgow University in 1906. He takes a special interest in the young and his Sabbath school is the largest in the Greenock Presbytery.

One of Arbroath’s best-known personalities, Mrs Betsy Swankie, 13 High Street, is to retire because of ill-health after a lifetime in the fish trade. She is 84. Mrs Swankie, who is principal of the firm of Swankie & Smith, was born at Old Shorehead, not far from the harbour. In her youth, along with other local girls, she would make the long trip to Perth to sell fish. There were no vans to help them with their country rounds. In fact, they were lucky to get a lift in a cart. The girls made many friends on their rounds.

One woman died and four other people were injured yesterday as two high-rise blocks of flats were demolished in a massive explosion which rocked the Gorbals area of Glasgow. The woman who died was first thought to have suffered a heart attack after a series of explosions ripped through the 22-storey blocks in Elizabeth Square. But later police said that chest injuries suffered by Helen Tinney may have been caused by flying debris from the explosion. A 21-year-old pregnant woman also fainted.

Scottish Great British Bake Off contestant Tom Hetherington has revealed his magic ingredient for coping with the heat in the kitchen – his time as a student in Dundee. The 29-year-old from Edinburgh completed his architecture studies degree at Dundee University in 2010 and received his Master of Architecture postgraduate degree the following year. Tom told the Radio Times his education would help him cope with any criticism of his bakes from judges Paul Hollywood and PrueLeith.
