Drivers warned to be on alert for road closures for special day

-

Motorists are being warned to watch out for road closures on World Car Free Day in St Andrews.

Market Street will be closed to vehicles from its junction with Bell Street to Union Street, as will the whole of Church Street, when the town takes part in the event for the first time on September 22 from 9am to 5pm.

The scheme is being run by St Andrews Space for Cycling (SASC) and also includes Fife Council and non-profit organisation the Transition University of St Andrews. BID St Andrews has also worked with local businesses.

Organisers hope it will allow residents and visitors to experience the town centre in a new way.

A programme of activities will be running on the day, including stunt cycle displays from the Clan, Bikeability cycle training, skateboard demonstrations and pop-up parks, all using the street as an open space without the usual traffic.

“We are hoping this event will help show how part of St Andrews could be transformed into a space that is more liveable and that encourages people to use active travel,” said Tony Waterston, chairman of SASC.

In addition to the street activities, SASC and Transition University are organising a led cycle ride at 2pm, starting and finishing at the fountain and travelling on safe routes to the end of the West Sands.

Council notices giving details of closure arrangements are being posted around the area.

Blue badge parking spaces and loading bays will be available just as they are during the Lammas Fair, although the area to be closed is smaller and does not include South Street.
