SHHE aka Su Shaw

Slessor Gardens, Dundee, September 15

- ANDREW WELSH

Electro exponent Su Shaw is set to open 3D’s second day with a preview of her new album.

The Dundee-based musician is first on at Slessor Gardens tomorrow, and will treat listeners to some of the ambient soundscapes she’s developed by exploring the remote north-west of Iceland.

“Earlier this year I travelled to a village in the Westfjords for an artist residency,” Su explains.

“While there, I began work on a multi-arts project which explores the themes of solitude and isolation using sound and visual samples from the Dýrafjörður landscape.

“In November I’m returning to Iceland to finish writing an album and to start developing a live performance alongside a filmmaker and visual artist.”

Su, aka SHHE, has spent the build-up to 3D in the Portuguese capital Lisbon, where she’s been exploring the trendy arts and retail quarters LX Factory and Village Underground.

“My family are Portuguese so I’ve been visiting Lisbon since I was young,” says the singer, who previously recorded as Panda Su.

“It’s a really cool city and I’d love to collaborate on some projects there.”

Su worked with photographer and dancer Harry Clark on her recent Eyes Shut video, and partnered French dancer Eve Ganneau on a sound and movement work unveiled at Leith’s Hidden Door Festival in May.

It’s therefore no surprise that she regards SHHE as a platform for collaboration across different art forms.

“Over the years, my music style has developed and this has encouraged me to approach writing and performing music in a different way,” Su adds.

“Learning sound production has given me confidence and space to explore ideas on my own but it’s also allowed me to experiment with creating, looping and layering live.

“I’ve recently started working with visuals and that’s something I want to explore more.”

Su reckons V&A Dundee’s arrival represents a major longterm boon for the city’s artists and musicians.

“Dundee’s a pretty special city, so anything that helps to highlight its potential is a positive,” she declares.

“The V&A will obviously attract more people to visit, but hopefully it will also provide a new platform for people currently living here to show their work.

“I’m looking forward to having a new space to perform in and play with.”

Looking ahead to 3D, Su’s impressed by the line-up. “I’m looking forward to Biome Collective’s light and sound show,” she adds.

“It’s nice to see a Dundee-rich line-up which showcases some of the talent that already exists here.”
