Everyone has an opinion on BBC series The Bodyguard . . .

- Lucy Penman

OK, I give in. We have to discuss The Bodyguard. There is still one episode to go in the BBC series and just about everyone in the entire world has an opinion on it. As an interesting social experiment, I bring you views on it so far from three generations of women. They are me, my mother and my daughter (well, it’s quite hard to form a focus group when you have no financial incentives to offer and can’t be bothered asking anyone else).

I shall try and summarise the programme so far without any spoilers: Man who used to be in Game of Thrones and who is what I believe the young people might call “proper hench” stops a terrorist incident. He’s then assigned to be the home secretary’s close protection officer. The home sec is Keeley Hawes, so they get a bit too close. There are further terrorist incidents. Or are there? And is she? Is he? Sorry – so tricky without giving anything away.

Interestingly, as each tragedy occurs, The Bodyguard’s hairstyle becomes more tragic.

Anyway, after watching the first couple of episodes, I urged The Student to do likewise so that we could discuss them. As she is a young person, she watched them on a laptop back-to-back and was subsequently furious.

“I can’t believe you made me watch that. How depressing is it that there is never a programme made which features a strong, independent, clever woman who is capable of resisting falling into bed with the nearest person? It’s insulting and demeaning.”

Then my mother phoned. “Are you watching The Bodyguard? Why must they ruin every programme with (SPOILER ALERT!!!) bottoms? Why do we have to see bottoms everywhere? Are they even allowed to make programmes without bottoms these days?”

My own shallow view – that it would be lovely to have someone going into rooms ahead of you to check for baddies (and spiders, which may not be in the job description but is equally important) – I kept to myself.
