Mackay-Steven focused on performing for Dons
Former Tangerine free to speak to other clubs in January
Aberdeen winger Gary Mackay-Steven insists he is relaxed about his contract situation as he enters the final months of his Dons deal.
The 28-year-old’s contract expires in the summer and he will be free to speak to other clubs in January.
But the former Celtic and Dundee United player, who has scored four goals in eight appearances this term, says his full focus is on performing for the Dons.
When asked if there have been any discussions with the club regarding a new deal, he said: “None so far.
“For me it is about staying fit and healthy and taking it one game at a time.
“That has served me well so far.
“I am at an age where I need to be playing football.
“I am performing the way I know I can and that is my sole focus.
“I have had a good pre-season and I want to go from strength to strength.
“I am really relaxed about the situation.
“I just need to play my own game and I am sure things will take care of themselves.”
Mackay-Steven, meanwhile, is thrilled to see so many of his former Dundee United team-mates enjoying purple patches in their own careers.
Andy Robertson has been named Scotland captain, Stuart Armstrong has completed a £7 million move to Southampton and John Souttar has made his international breakthrough following an impressive start to the season with Hearts.
Mackay-Steven said: “It is great and I am delighted for them.
“They have all done well. “They have all taken different paths but it is great to see each and every one of them performing at a high level.
“We had a good bunch of lads (at Dundee United).
“A lot of them are doing well for themselves.
“I will just continue to go on my own path but be happy for them at the same time.
“It is certainly no surprise the boys are playing at a high level and for the national team.
“I knew the talent they had. “They had different capabilities but they were all great players in their own right.
“It is no surprise to see them playing for Scotland.”
Mackay-Steven has no doubt Stuart Armstrong, who grew up in Aberdeen, will be a success south of the border with Southampton.
He added: “It is a great move for him. “I think he will do well there. “Andy Robertson went down to England a few years ago and went from strength to strength.
“I think Southampton will be a good club for Stuart.
“They like to play football and I think he will suit their style a lot.
“I am happy for him.
“He has done well and deserves everything he gets.”
