Relief for keeper after scans on injured leg

-

Motherwell goalkeeper Trevor Carson heaved a sigh of relief after being told he avoided suffering a serious injury in Saturday’s controversial collision with Hearts striker Uche Ikpeazu.

The Northern Ireland internationalist came off second best in a 50/50 challenge that led to Steven Naismith scoring the only goal for the early Premiership leaders after 28 minutes on Saturday.

Carson was unable to continue and was replaced by Mark Gillespie, with Steelmen manager Stephen Robinson admitting after the match that he feared the 30-year-old had fractured either his ankle or leg.

However, scan results have shown that Carson, who posted a picture showing his battle wounds on Twitter, has only sustained soft tissue damage.

A club statement read: “Trevor Carson suffered no serious injury in the tackle that saw him substituted during the weekend match with Hearts.

“Following scans on Monday and Tuesday, the goalkeeper was shown to have sustained no bone break or fracture.

“There is no other damage other than initial cuts, bruises and minor soft tissue damage.

“The Northern Ireland international is an injury doubt for the weekend trip to Aberdeen and will continue to be assessed.”

After watching footage of the incident, Robinson claimed Carson had been fouled by the Hearts player and that video technology would have come to referee Bobby Madden’s aid at the weekend.

Motherwell chief executive Alan Burrows has also called for the SPFL to commission a feasibility study into the use of the Video Assisted Referee system.
