Double-hitter as Terry and Karen sent home
After a week with no contestants sent off, two have been axed from the tent
Karen and Terry have left the The Great British Bake Off in a double exit.
Kim-Joy was named Star Baker as the pair were evicted from the Bake Off tent, following a week when all contestants were allowed to remain.
Good friends Terry, 56, and Karen, 60, failed to impress in their spice week challenges.
Paul Hollywood was alone in making the final judgment on who should leave the show in the fifth week, as fellow judge Prue Leith was unavailable because of illness.
Contestants were tasked with creating a ginger cake for their signature piece, the Middle Eastern pastry Ma’Amoul for the technical and a chandelier of spiced biscuits for the showstopper.
“To go with a baker that I had grown a bond with was so much easier
A soggy cake, oozing Ma’Amoul and a bland showstopper were enough to seal Terry’s fate.
Store assistant Karen put “too much booze” in her cake, and made a major mix-up with her Ma’Amoul which saw come last in the technical round.
She said: “It really helped me to leave with Terry, it was bitter sweet of course, and I had no doubt that I was going, I knew I couldn’t pull it back this time.
“But to go with a baker that I had grown a bond with was so much easier. We sat together holding hands when they said the verdict.”
Terry’s illness and absence from last week’s show meant that all contestants were spared being sent home, but the retired air steward failed to make it through another week on his return.
He also spoke of the bonds he shared on the show, saying: “My friendship with Karen has been so supportive, we had some kind of chemistry from the first moment we bumped into each other. She is a clever, amusing lady and I think we will be good friends for a long time.”
Rahul continued to impress, and was again hailed a “genius” by Hollywood. Manon and Kim-Joy were also given the honours of handshakes from the judge.
