Hazard wonder goal ends Reds’ sevenmatch winning run

-

Eden Hazard scored a superb winner as Chelsea came from behind to beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield in the third round of the Carabao Cup last night.

The Reds’ seven-match winning start to the season was halted after substitute Hazard fired past Simon Mignolet in the 85th minute at the end of a wonderful, mazy run.

Hazard’s goal came six minutes after he helped create Emerson Palmieri’s equaliser, which cancelled out Daniel Sturridge’s acrobatic 58th-minute opener.

It was the first of two meetings between the clubs this week, with a Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge to come on Saturday.

Dele Alli enjoyed the dream Milton Keynes homecoming as he scored the winning penalty that sent Tottenham past Watford.

Alli, who joined Spurs from MK Dons, returned to his former stomping ground and having drawn his side level in normal time, then sealed a 4-2 penalty shootout win after a lively finish saw the contest end 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Watford had gone in front 39 seconds into the second half through Isaac Success but Alli wiped that advantage out from the spot with 10 minutes to go after being fouled by Christian Kabasele, who was sent off.

Six minutes later Spurs, playing at the home of the League Two outfit because Wembley is unavailable, went in front through Erik Lamela, only for their former player Etienne Capoue to level with a heavily deflected effort and send the tie to penalties.

After Paulo Gazzaniga saved from Capoue and Quina, it was left to Alli to send his side through.

Arsenal survived a second-half rally from Brentford as a Danny Welbeck double proved enough to seal a place in round four.

The Gunners, beaten finalists in this competition last season, were pushed all the way by a muchchanged Brentford side but showed enough to advance with a 3-1 win as Welbeck scored twice in the first half to ensure safe progression.

The Championship promotion hopefuls were the better side after the interval and gave themselves a fighting chance of an upset courtesy of a fine Alan Judge free-kick, only for substitute Alexandre Lacazette to secure the win with a stoppage-time effort.

Nottingham Forest hung on to beat Stoke 3-2 at the City Ground.

Forest were 3-0 up after 50 minutes thanks to goals from Simon Osborn, Daryl Murphy while the Potters reduced the deficit thanks to Benik Afobe and Saido Berahino.

West Ham romped to an 8-0 victory over League Two side Macclesfield.

Scotland star Robert Snodgrass and debutant Grady Diangana both grabbed two, with other goals coming from Lucas Perez, Ryan Fredericks, Michail Antonio and Angelo Ogbonna.
