It would be churlish in the extreme not to accentuate the positives after a team earned its first points and win of the season. Talk of false dawns and swallows and summers can wait. There was plenty here to give encouragement to those who wish Dundee well.

After all the chopping and changing, arrivals and departures, Neil McCann has a centre-back partnership in Andy Boyle and Ryan Inniss worth persevering with.

He has full-backs playing in their natural positions.

In midfield, the manager has his best player, Glen Kamara, back and building up his match sharpness week on week.

In the absence of Paul McGowan it should also be noted others took responsibility in that area and the summer recruits will now feel they have made a contribution to the Dark Blue cause.

Benjamin Kallman also deserves a mention.

He won the free-kick that led to the crucial opening goal and put in the sort of shift his team-mates would appreciate even though a goal chance never came his way.

With McGowan and Kenny Miller to return, and Roarie Deacon ready to make an impact, you can start to see light at the end of the tunnel.

After a week that produced headlines of Dundee being the “worst football team in the world” all of the above is a significant step forward.
