ICE HOCKEY: Dundee suffer two weekend defeats at hands of Guildford

- KRIS SMITH

Stars were burnt twice by the Guildford Flames over the weekend as their determined comeback efforts were held off in both games.

Flames won Saturday’s game 6-5 but Stars were boosted for the return at Dundee Ice Arena by the return of Matt Marquardt. Petr Chaloupka and Matt Bissonnette missed out.

Guildford were still without Brett Ferguson and Kevin Phillips and ex-Star Travis Fullerton was left out after backstopping the Flames in their win on Saturday, meaning Chris Carrozzi started in nets.

Stars continued their trend of starting slowly and their powerplay woes continued as they failed to get off the mark while on an early man advantage.

John Dunbar’s persistence paid off as he led waves of attacks on the Stars goal. He sent a pass to Ian Watters and his backhanded shot beat Pontus Sjogren down low in the seventh minute.

Omar Pacha’s men struggled to grab control of the game but, despite creating some good chances, were given two more powerplay chances.

Flames managed to kill the penalties, although the hosts applied some pressure in the final minute of the first period.

Penalties were a constant theme in the second period and the Stars built up some pressure on the powerplay but still could not trouble Carrozzi.

Eric Lindhagen sacrificed his body to prevent Stars from tying the scores at the mid-way point.

Lukas Lundvald was given a 10-minute misconduct for a boarding penalty but Dundee found their rhythm and Marquardt had the biggest chance but sent his shot over the bar.

The Stars forward then tried to round the goalie before going for a wraparound but failed in his attempt with four minutes left in the second period.

Calle Ackered caused alarm for Dundee’s defence but missed both his chances before forcing crucial saves from Sjogren.

Both teams created chances as the third period action went from end-toend. Ricci played in Corcoran but he was denied before Reddick fed the puck to Ackered, only for his shot to be gloved by Sjogren.

Lundvald almost drew Dundee level when his first effort was saved and, after following-up on his own rebound, he was stopped again by Carrozzi.

Stars were back on the powerplay in the 50th minute and 25 seconds later, Cownie tucked home the equaliser.

More penalties followed before Reddick fired a shot straight over the shoulder of the Dundee goalie just 34 seconds into a powerplay but it got even worse for Stars as 16 seconds later Jamie Crooks picked out the top corner to make it 3-1 in the 53rd minute.

The home team had a quick answer as Brian Hart got the puck into the attacking zone and cut it back to Marquardt to fire in less than a minute later but Flames sealed the victory when Ritt scored into the empty net.

Fife Flyers beat Sheffield Steelers 4-1 in Kirkcaldy last night to complete their fourth straight win in the Elite League.
