Award for high school group

A student-led LGBT+ group at Kirkcaldy High School has won an Excellence Award for their work tackling homophobia and prejudice.

The project, founded in 2015, was given the special accolade by the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (Cosla) during a ceremony in St Andrews last Thursday.

The award recognises the meaningful initiative which is actively making a difference to the quality of people’s lives in the local community.

The project has had success in tackling bullying through training and campaigning and worked alongside Stonewall Scotland, “Respectme” and the Scottish Government.

Rector Derek Allan said: “We are incredibly proud of KHS LGBT+, which plays such a big part in creating a happy, inclusive atmosphere in the school.

“It is a great honour for Cosla to recognise the initiative and the powerful impact it has had. The group has also had a significant impact across and beyond Fife.

“In many ways they are leading a revolution in attitudes.”

“Many people find happiness and succeed in life despite what happened in school.

“We’re trying to achieve those things because of what happened in school.”

Group members travelled to the glittering ceremony alongside their rector and teacher Paul Murray to collect the President’s Cosla award.
