Clan add to Stars’ woes with shootout victory

ICE HOCKEY: Dundee let lead slip as Glasgow claim win on penalty shots

- KRIS SMITH

Dundee Stars were left disappointed again after losing another close encounter with rivals Glasgow Clan.

The hosts led 2-1 at Dundee Ice Arena but were taken to penalty shots and Clan handed them a sixth straight defeat.

Stars’ head coach Omar Pacha said: “There were positives again, but I think in the second period we allowed too many chances, even if we had the lead.

“We did not pick up a guy in front and they score, after that it was trading chances, left, right and centre.

“There was two good goalies tonight and we just have to find the net.”

Clan’s Matt Beca was denied by a post as the visitors built up some early pressure but Stars almost opened the scoring when Charles Corcoran chased a breakaway pass but the Glasgow goalie cleared the danger.

Dundee’s Johan Andersson found room for a shot before Clan killed two powerplay chances for the hosts.

Kris Inglis blocked a dangerous shot on the home goal before Andersson was denied, leaving the game at 0-0.

Stars’ Pontus Sjogren made a huge stop to deny Gratton before his second shot got stuck under the leg of the Dundee netminder. It was poked home by Connolly and the goal was given despite protests from Dundee.

Stars levelled quickly with a goal in the 26th minute, when Andersson lifted a shot past Rumpel.

Stars were right back on the attack and a bullet from Ricci found the top corner as Dundee went ahead just a minute later.

Cownie performed an excellent move around a Glasgow defender but could not jam it past Rumpel as Stars continued to attack the Clan goal.

Vaclav Stupka was denied twice on the breakaway by Sjogren as he made two magnificent stops.

Stars failed to capitalise on a man advantage and only another fine save from the Stars stopper kept Clan out.

A Mike Sullivan shot was stopped by Rumpel who then made a diving save to keep out Lundvald and the second stanza ended with a dominant Dundee side leading 2-1.

Glasgow made a good start to the third period and after Beca’s shot was saved, Connolly roofed the rebound into the Dundee net to tie the scores just 75 seconds into the third period.

Stars pushed for the lead and a Francois Bouchard shot was deflected into the air by Rumpel but dropped on the goal line and was cleared.

Despite the teams exchanging chances the game went to an extra period and Corcoran and Marquardt were denied before a Cownie shot was saved and Sjogren blocked a Connolly effort.

In the final minute of overtime, Stupka was stopped by a diving Sjogren and the game went to penalty shots.

Hart, Lundvald and Marquardt were all denied for Stars with Pitt, Rasmus Bjerrum and Connolly netting for Clan.

Stars lost 5-2 to Cardiff Devils on Saturday despite leading the champions at the first break thanks to two goals in four minutes from Connor Cox and Lukas Lundvald Nielsen.
