Hearts beaten despite early advantage

-

Managerless Kelty Hearts slipped to defeat at East Stirlingshire despite taking a second-minute lead to end their interest in the Scottish South Region Challenge Cup.

Ciaran Chalmers gave the Lowland League leaders the lead after two minutes and it wasn’t until the hour mark that Paul McCafferty notched Shire’s equaliser. Andy Rodgers then gave them the lead.

With five minutes left Rodgers hit the third but soon afterwards Stuart Cargill set up a frantic finish with Hearts’ second, but it wasn’t to be.

Jeanfield Swifts got revenge on Broxburn Athletic, the only team to have beaten them this season, with a 4-2 extra-time win at Riverside Stadium to reach round four.

The first half finished goalless, but Gary Fergus fired Swifts in front within two minutes of the restart. However, Gordon Donaldson equalised on the hour.

Swifts regained the lead through Chris Dodds on 71 minutes only for Connor Kelly to square matters three minutes from time.

Goals from Aaron Whitehead and Richard Donovan in the second period of extra-time sealed Swifts’ victory and inflicted the first defeat of the season on the visitors.

The only other games involving Courier Country clubs were also in South Region Challenge Cup third round and both suffered home defeats.

Inverkeithing HS went down 4-2 to Preston Athletic, while Burntisland Shipyard lost 5-2 to Coldstream.
