Wildcats pounce to knock Wanderers off top

-

Western Wildcats ousted Dundee Wanderers from pole position in Saturday’s top-of-the-table clash, while Grove Menzieshill moved into the top three with a home win over Hillhead.

A drag flick by Emily Dark gave Wanderers an early edge but the Cats had clawed their way back to lead 2-1 through Mckenzie Bell and Erin Stevens before Becky Ward struck the final blow from a penalty corner in overtime.

Grove Menzieshill put in a storming second half to run out 6-3 winners over Hillhead.

Thanks to the visiting keeper playing a blinder the first half ended at one apiece, however the Dundee outfit turned on the burners after the break with Lucy Smith adding a brace to singles from Lucy Murray, Stott sisters Katie and Ellie and Katie Robertson.

Top of the Division 2 table Erskine Stewart’s Melville dished out a 5-0 drubbing to Dundee University, while Grove’s second string were forced to call off their Championship 1 encounter with Watsonians due to a flooded pitch at Dawson Park.

It was all bad news for local Championship 2 contenders with Perthshire losing out 3-1 to Falkirk & Linlithgow, and Kinross going down 5-0 to Erskine Stewart’s Melville II, while Dundee and St Andrews student sides suffered heavy defeats against Hillhead II and Glasgow Uni II.

Midland teams somehow managed to overcome the soggy conditions in Round 2 of the League Cup.

In Pool A Wanderers II again hit form, Kirsty Jefferies (3), Ashley Bunce and Paula Lucas registering in a 5-0 result over St Andrews IV, while Stirling Uni II posted a 2-1 win over Kinross II.

In pool B Perthshire II ran away with the points with Jennifer McLaren, Ailise Milroy and Lexi McMillan sharing six in an 8-0 victory over St Andrews V.

Louise Nixon, Rebekah Rose and a double for Heather Soutar took the points for Blairgowrie over Monarchs, while in Pool C Christine Morris’ single was not quite enough as St Andrews III shaded a 2-1 win.
