Scramble for top four slots hots up in Premier League

-

With the race to make the top four at the halfway stage a key factor, it’s a blockbuster weekend of Premier League action ahead as only four points split six potential contenders.

Pacesetters Wildcats line up for a real scrap with defending champions Edinburgh University, lying fourth due to their late start, but ominously the students already boast the best offensive and defensive stats and should post a sure-fire victory over Grange tomorrow.

Dundee Wanderers lag a single point behind but their frustrations at last week’s first defeat will no doubt be vented on their visit to Watsonians.

Grove Menzieshill are a further two points off the pace in third, one point better off than hosts Clydesdale Western, but the Glasgow heavyweights look to be in a false position having played a game less than most of their rivals.

St Andrews University are off to a flyer in division 2 with four wins from four suggesting visitors Inverleith will cause them no problems.

Their Dundee peers travel north where a win over Granite City Wanderers would see them leapfrog their hosts.

Grove’s second string travel to the capital where lessons learned are likely to be the best they can hope for against Championship 1 leaders Edinburgh University. However the Dundee youngsters are much better placed than Stirling Uni who must take something from Waverley Inveresk Trinity if they hope to move off the bottom of the table.

Kinross and Dundee Uni II engage in a derby with the former hoping their luck will turn and recent good performances will finally be rewarded to move up the Championship 2 table.

After two rounds of the Midland League Cup it’s back to league duty for local clubs. Madras and Wanderers II are the early frontrunners in division 1, leading the field by five points.

Division 2 is less clear-cut with Perthshire III and Monarchs just edging ahead by a couple of points.

The Midland indoor league kicks off at Douglas Sports Centre on Tuesday, 7-10 pm.
