In a bold move both to spread the word and reduce costs, Scottish Basketball’s flagship women’s professional team Caledonia Pride will play WBBL home games in Paisley and Grangemouth next weekend.

But for now the lack of a suitable venue or a local club to take on the promotion may prevent the plan being extended to Tayside or further north.

“We’d love to take a game to Tayside,” said Pride’s assistant coach Donnie MacDonald, the former Tayside coach now based in Edinburgh.

“Not only do we have former Musketeer Hannah Robb as the Pride team captain but 15-year-old Ella Doherty from Perth is improving every week and looking more and more at home in the Women’s BBL.

“Ella’s emerging as an important player and she’s also still playing for Perth Phoenix in both under-16 and under-18 leagues.

“We’ve seen a number of youngsters coming down to watch them both but there’s just nowhere with enough seating really.”

Tomorrow Pride are away to Durham Palatinates looking for their third win in a row after their 78-70 home cup win over the same side last weekend.

Then they will play Oaklands Wolves at the Lagoon SC in Paisley a week today and Notts Wildcats at Grangemouth SC a week tomorrow in a game promoted by Falkirk Fury.

Scottish men’s league leaders Dunfermline Reign have another blank weekend but Stirling Knights have a vital away game to Edinburgh Uni today as they bid to pull clear of the relegation zone.
