A meeting of stockholders and others interested in investments of the Scottish railways was held in Edinburgh under the auspices of the Scottish Railway Stockholders’ Protection Association. Mr Harry Hope presided and referred to the question of the Government and the railways. He said that President of the Board of Trade had stated that railways would not revert to their pre-war state and indicated that Government control would last for some time after peace had been declared.

There is no settlement yet in the dispute over free “hair-dos” at Kirkcaldy Technical College. Fife hairdressers complained because women are able to get the free service at the college, where apprentices are trained. A meeting of hairdressers was held to discuss the situation. After studying a reply from the education authority to the hairdressers’ federation’s request to the college to stop giving free hair-dos, the hairdressers are calling for a meeting with the college principal.

Wet Wet Wet fans have chomped their way through a waist line threatening 60,000 chocolate bars to earn free tickets for the pop group’s concert. The Scots band are staging an open-air show next July at a venue which is yet to be decided, in association with Cadbury and 2,000 seats have been claimed in four weeks. Winning a free ticket takes serious dedication to chocolate – each fan must consume 30 bars to get their hands on the promotional wrappers.

A global manufacturing group is delivering a major jobs boost for Dundee as it expands its Tokheim fuel pumps business in the city. US based Dover is investing £14 million in adding a major extension to its manufacturing centre at West Pitkerro Industrial Estate. The move will see 140 posts created at the facility, pushing the group’s workforce to a record high of 640. The factory produces around 20,000 fuel rigs each year and the cash injection will allow Dover to introduce a new production line.
