What may prove to be the last of the great battles of this war opened on the western front, when British, French and American forces commenced a fresh attack. The British attack extends from just south of the Scheldt down to Oisy, a distance of some 25 miles, the French extending the attack to Guise, about 10 miles further south, making a total front here of 35 miles. The Americans, after undergoing a long and severe struggle, have reached points of vantage in the Meuse region.

St Andrews golfers face a substantial increase in green fees for the Old Course next season. In a major change disclosed by St Andrews Links Trust, local golfers wishing to play the course will have to pay extra for the privilege. Local charges have lagged behind visitor prices in recent years, according to trust general manager Nicky James. One change is a new yearly ticket, costing £85 for St Andrews residents. It entitles holders to play on five of the six courses, the exception being the Old Course.

Urgent action is needed to repair dangerous headstones in graveyards across Fife. Up to a third of stones in some cemeteries are believed to be unsafe. It is estimated that £400,000 of work is needed at 11 priority sites. Repairs at a further 104 graveyards will be carried out over the next five years. The poor condition of dozens of stones was discovered during a survey carried out by Fife Council workers following the tragic death of a boy in Glasgow, crushed by a falling tombstone.
