A brazen thief duped staff at a city hotel before breaking into lockers in the building’s swimming pool and stealing hundreds of pounds worth of contents.

Police are investigating after a man wearing grey jogging bottoms and a hooded top, told staff at the front desk of the Double Tree by Hilton, next to the A90, he had left his wallet in the changing rooms.

He then broke into the lockers of people using the leisure facilities and stole their valuables.

Car keys, money, clothing and other items including smartphones and purses are all understood to have been taken on the afternoon of Sunday November 4.

It is believed shocked guests were then told they would not be receiving any form of refund or compensation.

The gym and pool is maintained and operated by 7 Hospitality Ltd on behalf of the hotel, close to the Swallow roundabout on the Dundee to Perth dual carriageway.

A spokesperson for the organisation said: “We can confirm that a theft of personal belongings did take place at the hotel’s leisure club and that the matter is subject to a police investigation.

“The safety and security of our guests is a key priority and the hotel has security procedures in place which are designed to safeguard hotel guests and members as well as paying members of the public.

“As there is an ongoing investigation we cannot comment further at this time.”

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “We are aware of the reported thefts and are carrying out inquiries.

“We would like to trace a man described as white, in his twenties, about 5ft 6in tall and of medium build.

“He was wearing a grey hooded top, grey jogging bottoms and a dark baseball cap.

“If anyone has any information that could assist us, please call 101 and quote reference number CR/27016/18.”
