Security advice issued to deter thieves as dark nights draw in

-

Police are taking action to advise Fife householders on how to protect their homes from to criminals over the winter.

Officers will be stepping up patrols and giving out tips on keeping properties secure.

Operation Principle, which targets acquisitive crime, will see officers focus on preventing housebreaking and thefts.

Police Scotland said targeted patrols of local communities during hours of darkness will be increased to provide reassurance and deter criminals.

Helped by youth volunteers, officers will raise awareness of home security and hand out leaflets to householders and businesses.

Fife division operations Superintendent Sandy Brodie said: “Unfortunately, criminals can be lured by the cover of darkness to target insecure homes and property, which are an easy target for the opportunistic thief.”

Advice includes ensuring windows and doors are locked, including those of sheds and garages and using timer switches for lights when out.

People are also advised to fit external security lights and ensure valuable items are out of sight and locked away.

Car keys should also be kept out of sight and cars should never be left running unattended while they are defrosted.

Mr Brodie said: “The public should remain vigilant but not be alarmed.

“Falling victim to crime is a distressing experience at any time of year but can be especially upsetting during the winter months.”

Security surveys of homes and premises can be arranged with community safety officers by phoning 101.
