Perth winger admits family cashed in on goal that never was
Wright still looking to open league account after Accies strike given as OG
Drey Wright netted a few quid for goal backers after being credited with a strike in St Johnstone’s 4-0 win over Hamilton.
But the in-form Perth winger admits he’s still searching for his first Premiership counter since a summer switch from Colchester United.
Wright, 23, was surprised to find he’d been credited with a goal.
But the Englishman confessed it was definitely down to Accies full-back Ziggy Gordon.
“I can’t claim the goal but some of my family still won a bit of money from it because the bookies paid out,” he revealed.
“They won’t be too bothered now if it’s being taken away from me. You could probably tell by the low-key celebration that it wasn’t my goal and the ref said it would probably go down as an OG.
“I joked that if Tony Watt got his goal against Hibs after a deflection surely I had to be in with a chance.
“A lot of the boys didn’t know what had happened. But it took a big deflection off their lad’s head which wrong-footed the keeper.
“To be fair, Tony was a lot closer to the goal and it was a shot against Hibs so that meant it could go down to him.
“But I was definitely trying to cross it and it didn’t fly in like the recent Daniel Candeias goal for Rangers against St Mirren.”
Wright has exploded on the Perth scene after Saints took advantage of cross-border transfer regulations to land him without forking out a six-figure fee.
“I’m absolutely loving it up here,” he said. “It’s a pleasure to play with these guys. I feel my performances have been improving week by week.
“The only thing missing is goals. But as long as we keep winning I’m not too fussed. It all came together when we put Hamilton to the sword. We created loads of opportunities and could have had more goals.”
Tommy Wright’s Perth men went into the international break on a five-game winning run, with keeper Zander Clark unbeaten in more than seven hours.
“We have a solid base at the back and know Zander is capable of making saves if he is called into action,” said the Saints attacker.
Wright has forged an impressive partnership with strikers Watt and Matty Kennedy.
“Tony will be wanting to get goals again but his all-round game is even better now than earlier in the season,” he stressed.
“Matty has got three in four games playing in a more central role with Tony.
“He has licence to move around and he’s causing teams real problems.”
