Police have confirmed they are treating the death of a schoolboy in Coupar Angus as murder.

Kane Morris was found dead in a property on the town’s Union Street in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Yesterday, for the first time, Police Scotland’s Tayside Division confirmed their probe into the death of the 10-yearold is now a murder investigation.

An eight-year-old girl was also found at the scene with life-threatening injuries.

She was rushed to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee where she remains in a critical but stable condition.

It is understood her mother, a nurse with NHS Tayside, has maintained a vigil at her bedside.

A 37-year-old man remains under arrest after he was discovered injured in the area after falling from a second-floor window.

Police are yet to charge anyone in connection with Kane’s murder.

As the inquiry stretched into a fourth day, police also appealed for two men thought to have heard a disturbance outside the Union Street address minutes before the incident, to come forward.

They were believed to have walked past the property at 2.05am.

The incident was reported to police by a member of the public at 2.30am.

The pair contacted police within hours of the appeal and police urged anyone else with information to make themselves known.

A police statement said: “Our inquiries remain ongoing in order for us to establish the full circumstances of what happened and we continue to urge anyone who hasn’t spoken to us already to do so.

“A 37-year-old man remains under arrest in connection with the incident. An eight-year-old girl who was also injured during the incident remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

“Local officers will also be in the community conducting additional patrols over the next few days as our investigation continues.”

Kane was a pupil at Coupar Angus

Primary School.

Perth and Kinross Council said it would continue to provide support for his fellow primary six pupils and the wider school community.

Karen Reid, the local authority’s chief executive, said: “Our heartfelt sympathies go to the family and friends of Kane Morris.

“Support will continue to be given to pupils at Coupar Angus Primary School to help them through this tragedy in their local community.”

SNP Strathmore councillor Fiona Sarwar said: “This remains a deeply distressing time and my thoughts are with the family and friends of Kane Morris.

“Extra support is being provided to the teachers and pupils of his school for as long as it is needed and I would encourage anyone struggling, to reach out for help.

“The school and Coupar Angus community will take steps to remember Kane when they feel the time is right.”
