The Allied armies may yet be called upon to enforce the terms of the armistice concluded with Germany. There are many signs that the Germans regard the convention merely as another “scrap of paper.” Following on the report that Allied prisoners in Germany are to be compelled to continue to work under armed guards pending repatriation comes Marshal Foch’s warning that acts of destruction and pillage by the Germans in Belgium must cease at once.

One of Scotland’s most famous actresses, Miss Sophie Stewart, returns to the Perth stage soon. Miss Stewart, who hails from Crieff, has toured the world in her long career on the stage, yet she will be appearing in Perth for the first time since 1928! She is at present appearing as Lady Bracknell in Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest in Edinburgh and will play the same part in the Perth production which opens on November 26. She has many relatives in the Perth district.

Farmers are being encouraged to turn their fields into burial grounds – with the possibility that it might help them qualify for EC set-aside grants to limit crop production. The development of field burial grounds could also help replenish Britain’s dwindling woodlands. The Natural Death Centre, which advises people on alternative funerals, thinks that farmers could receive Forestry Commission, or even EC, grants to develop burial grounds. They say there is a huge untapped market.
