Students take to the streets to celebrate graduating in style
CEREMONY: Dundee University graduates join loved ones to mark their achievements
Students were all smiles yesterday as Dundee University wrapped up this year’s graduations.
Students from the School of Nursing and Health Sciences, the School of Dentistry and the School of Medicine donned their gowns for the traditional City Square festivities.
Among the graduates was Syrian refugee Rawad Qaq.
The Courier told yesterday how Rawad endured a perilous 22-day journey, across the Mediterranean by boat and over land to Germany, before coming to Dundee on a humanitarian scholarship to study a Masters in Forensic Dentistry.
He said: “You cannot even begin to imagine what it means to graduate with this degree. The education here has been fantastic, it has had a huge impact on me.”
Also graduating was Gary Jordan, who “accidentally” chose a career as a nurse.
The 30-year old said: “I had studied law and then maths with psychology beforehand and did well in both, but never really felt like either courses were for me. But after doing some volunteer work with The Samaritans, helping people quickly developed into a passion and one I realised I wanted to turn into a career.
“If you had told me 10 years ago that I would be a nurse one day then I would never have believed you.”
Sunday Times journalist Christina Lamb was given an honorary degree.
