- JACK MCKEOWN jmckeown@thecourier.co.uk The new Mercedes GLE goes on sale next year.

Mercedes has revealed details of its latest luxury SUV – the new GLE, which features several upgrades including an extra pair of rear seats, the latest iteration of Mercedes’ infotainment system and upgraded engines.

The range kicks off with the GLE 300d, which replaces the 250d. Despite the name, it’s still a 2.0-litre – a fourcylinder diesel producing 242bhp and 500Nm of torque. It’s capable of 0-60mph in seven seconds, and will achieve 46.3mpg while emitting 162g/ km of CO2.

For people who prefer petrol power, Mercedes offers the GLE 450, powered by a six-cylinder engine with a mildhybrid “EQ Boost” system attached.

The 48V setup adds 22bhp to the car’s overall output, giving it a total of 362bhp and 500Nm of torque. The 450 is capable of 0-60mph in 5.5 seconds and will return 33.6mpg while emitting 191g/ km of CO2.

All GLEs come with the latest MBUX infotainment system, spread across two 12.3-inch displays on the instrument panel and centre console. It includes features such as augmented-reality navigation, which overlays direction instructions on to the feed from the front camera, as well as voice activation simply by saying “Hey Mercedes”.

All cars also get 20-inch AMG alloy wheels, illuminated grab handles and running boards, privacy glass, heated front seats, Nappa leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control and active parking assist.

The GLE 450 adds active air suspension, as well as a seven-seat package, which is a £1,995 option on the 300d. It includes a manually folding third row plus a four-zone climate control. Optional equipment includes a premium Burmester sound system, keyless go, LED headlights, wireless charging and an off-road package.

Prices start from £55,685 for the 300d, rising to £62,300 for the 450. Order books are open and the first UK deliveries will be in spring 2019.
