OAP facing jail for iron attack

-

A Fife pensioner has admitted hitting his wife on the head with an iron.

John Canning, 65, who has an “appalling” record for domestic abuse, also kicked the woman in the face and knocked a tooth out during the December 6 attack.

He admitted assaulting his new wife at an address on Wellesley Road in Methil by pushing her on the body, repeatedly kicking her on the head and hitting her with the iron.

Canning, of Broad Street, Cowdenbeath, claimed he has a serious drinking problem and is seeking help.

Depute fiscal Sarah Lumsden told Dunfermline Sheriff Court there had been an argument between the victim and Canning. A struggle ensued in the bedroom.

Canning later phoned an acquaintance and told them: “I’ve beaten Louise up.”

Sheriff Charles Macnair said: “You have the most appalling record of domestic abuse against your previous partner.

“No sooner do you marry your new wife than you, in your own words, ‘beat her up’. You struck her on the head with an iron.

“It’s only by the greatest of good fortune that the injury was not more serious.”

The sheriff said he would call for reports but only to see if there was a need for postrelease supervision as a jail sentence would be imposed.

Sentence was deferred until December 4.
