Broughty put five past Spiders – but Kirrie replace Star Hearts at bottom

- MARK JOHNSON

McBookie.com East Super League Broughty Athletic put 12 past Coupar Angus last weekend in the League Cup and were among the goals again as they returned to Super League action at home to Downfield on Saturday.

All the goals came in the last half-hour, Marc Scott opened the scoring on 58 minutes and an own goal 60 seconds later doubled Broughty’s advantage.

Derryn Kesson then made it three from the penalty spot on 65 minutes and 10 minutes later he repeated the trick. Scott scored his second with two minutes remaining to complete a 5-0 victory.

Broughty have placed Fraser and Scott Smith on the transfer list. All inquiries to Jim Finlayson on 07887 966741

Glenrothes threw away a 2-0 lead at Fauldhouse United and in the end were a little lucky to take a point. Sam Buchan put Glens in front and John Martin made it two on 23 minutes. The visitors led 2-0 until the final quarter-hour when Ryan Smilie pulled a goal back.

Three minutes later Fauldhouse were level as Darren Gribben scored from the spot. The home side looked favourites to get the winner but Glenrothes managed to hold out for a valuable point.

Kennoway Star Hearts climbed off the bottom with a 4-0 win over Kirrie Thistle, a result that sees the Angus side replace the Fifers at the bottom.

Craig Johnstone opened the scoring just before half-time and doubled the advantage on 58 minutes. Dylan Muir made it 3-0 on the hour-mark before Lee Bryce completed the scoring with a fourth 10 minutes later.

Stevie Kay’s reign as Tayport manager started with a defeat to league leaders Lochee United at The Canniepairt.

Scott Webster put United in front on 10 minutes and Stephen McNally made it 2-0 after half-time as the visitors retained their unbeaten status at the top.

Forfar West End closed the gap on third-placed Thornton Hibs with a highly impressive 4-1 win at Memorial Park.

Craig Batchelor put West End 2-0 ahead before Gary Thomson pulled a goal back. Jamie Montgomery restored the two -goal cushion on 78 minutes and Batchelor completed his hat-trick in injury time.

Carnoustie Panmure ended their visit to Whitburn in defeat and with only nine men due to two controversial sendings off. Whitburn took the lead after five minutes through Richard Gunn but Barrie Gourlay rifled the Gowfers level midway through the first half.

Harvey Dailly was bizarrely booked early in the second half when he was pushed down in the box and this would come back to haunt Phil McGuire’s men.

Gourlay was somewhat harshly sent off on the hour when he conceded a penalty and Carnoustie anger at the decision wasn’t helped when Duncan put the home side 2-1 in front.

Dailly received a second booking in stoppage-time and joined Gourlay in the dressing room.

North End inflicted yet another heavy defeat on Coupar Angus, although the visitors did take the lead after 19 minutes.

Unfortunately for them that was as good as it got as Gary Sutherland made sure North End led at the break with a brace. Liam McCartney, Lee Cameron, Kieran Sturrock, Ryan Smith and Gary Archibald all scored in the second 45 for a resounding 7-1 win.

Lochee Harp took a deserved point form a 1-1 draw with promotion-chasing Luncarty at Downfield Park. Tony Holt put the visitors in front on 19 minutes but Sam McDonald equalised for Michael Gormley’s Harp with 20 minutes remaining.

Scone Thistle are up to second following a 2-0 win at home to Violet.

Montrose Roselea remain unbeaten at the top of the North Region Super League after a 1-1 draw against Bridge of Don Thistle, sub Marc Walker securing a point with an 84th-minute equaliser.
