Golfer and hotelier honorary graduates
Golfer Paul Lawrie and US businessman Herb Kohler will become honorary graduates of St Andrews University today.
Former Open Champion Lawrie is to be recognised this morning for his contribution to Scotland as a sporting role model and his commitment to the development of junior golf.
Aberdeen-born Lawrie won the championship in 1999 and was vice-captain of the European Ryder Cup team in 2016.
Kohler, owner of the Old Course Hotel Golf Resort and Spa in St Andrews, and chairman of the Kohler Company, will be awarded in the afternoon for his significant contribution to the town and community of St Andrews.
His Wisconsin-based firm is best known for its plumbing products but his love of golf led him to take over the hotel overlooking the Old Course and nearby Hamilton Hall, which was converted into luxury apartments.
Tomorrow Kirkcaldy author Val McDermid, known as the queen of crime, will be given an honorary degree in recognition of her outstanding career as an award-winning writer and broadcaster.
They will join more than 1,000 students from across the world at the Younger Hall as they graduate from the 600-year-old university.
Taking to the stage to receive their certificates will be graduands from 80 different countries including Scotland, China, Nigeria, Germany and the USA.
