Fife drink-driver who ran out of fuel on A92 jailed for four months

A Fife man was found to be more than three times over the drink-driving limit when his car ran out of fuel on the A92.

Kyle Harrower had been drinking in Glenrothes when he decided to give someone a lift home to Rosyth in the early hours of the morning on November 4.

But the 24-year-old ran out of fuel when he was near Lochgelly and was forced to pull over to the side of the road.

Police officers on routine patrol saw the stopped car at around 5.15am and went to help by providing safety cover for the stricken vehicle.

Depute fiscal Alistair McDermid told Dunfermline Sheriff Court that officers soon detected a strong smell of alcohol coming from Harrower.

He said: “An officer spoke to the accused, who was the driver. He said he had run out of fuel. He attempted to start the engine several times.

“The officer detected a strong smell of alcohol.

“Separate to this, an anonymous call had been received by police naming the accused and saying he was driving under the influence of alcohol.”

The court was also told that Harrower, of Narrow Wynd in West Wemyss, had been jailed in April for failing to comply with non-custodial court orders.

He also has a drink-driving conviction from 2016.

Harrower admitted that on November 4 on the A92 westbound near Lochgelly, he drove a car having consumed alcohol.

His breath reading measured 74 microgrammes of alcohol. The legal limit is 22 microgrammes. Sheriff Chris Shed jailed Harrower for four months and banned him from driving for three years.
