Wanderers keep lead as Hillhead give strong show
Former national indoor champions Dundee Wanderers lead by a single point over city neighbours Grove Menzieshill who finished the opening day with maximum points from their two contests.
Hillhead were the shock troops, putting in a strong shift to finish all square at 4-4 with title holders Clydesdale Western.
They then proved it was no fluke by later holding Wanderers 2-2.
There was no hint of the drama to come as the Dundee outfit rattled up a 7-1 victory over CALA, teenage strikers Emily Dark and Millie Skidmore sharing four of their goals.
The blip against Hillhead clearly galvanised them into action as they rounded off a testing 3-game day with superb team performance that resulted in a 6-3 triumph over Clydesdale, as their new recruit Sophia Free bagging a brace.
Grove and Watsonians were neck and neck throughout their clash but the Taysiders emerged 4-3 winners.
That came when Sam Sangster completed a second half hat-trick of set pieces bang on the whistle after Jaime Lyon had initially edged them ahead.
Grange provided less of a challenge as Grove went 6-0 up before Emmie Petrie netted a consolation. Sangster repeated her triple set piece conversions with Lyon (2), Holly Duval and Ellie Stott adding to a convincing 7-1 result.
Western Wildcats’ mission to regain their place in the top flight was clear as they hammered Grove IIs 16-0 before racking up a 4-0 win over Wanderers IIs.
The former recovered to draw 5-5 with Bon Accord who lost out 8-2 to Wanderers II.
