Player spoken to after ‘blacking up’

- NEIL ROBERTSON

Dundee United manager Robbie Neilson has stressed that he expects his players to uphold the highest standards in public in the wake of the Jamie Robson controversy.

Pictures alleging that the defender “blacked up” for a fancy dress party have appeared on social media.

Neilson, speaking at the club’s media conference in St Andrews yesterday, revealed he had discussed the matter with Robson and will now let United’s in-house disciplinary procedures run their course.

Neilson said: “I spoke to him briefly this morning.

“The standards at this football club have to kept at the highest level.

“I think it’s important whether you are on the pitch, off the pitch, at the training ground or wherever it is – even in your social life – you have to keep the highest standards. We will chat again later today with him and the club will deal with it in-house.

“I can’t really say too much about it but the standards have to be high.

“We will have a chat and he will get the opportunity to speak. With these things there is a process to go through.

“He is employee of the football club so there is confidentiality there as well.

“We are a big football club and we get a lot of exposure. The players, staff and everyone associated with it needs to realise that … when you are out and about and doing different things you are representing the club and the fans.

“So we will deal with it over the next few days.”
