Perth player sets up intriguing second round meeting with fellow Scot

- LORIN MCDOUGALL

Perth’s Scott Donaldson signed off with a 96 break as he stormed through to the second round of the Scottish Open at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena yesterday.

The St Johnstone fan lost the opening two frames to English veteran Rory McLeod – who turned pro three years before Donaldson was born – but frame three proved to be a massive turning point.

The Scot nicked it despite McLeod’s 55 break, and a run of four straight frames gave him a 4-2 victory and booked an intriguing second round tie today with Larkhall’s 2006 world champion Graeme Dott.

Dott booked his place in the second round with a 4-3 win over John J Astley but fellow Scot Fraser Patrick was edged out in a final frame decider by China’s Chen Feilong and Chris Totten was beaten 4-1 by Northern Ireland’s Gerard Greene, who now faces John Higgins.

Beaten UK Championship finalist Mark Allen is safely through to the second round.

Allen, who was beaten 10-6 by Ronnie O’Sullivan in York on Sunday, overcame 2016 English Open winner Liang Wenbo 4-2 in Glasgow.

Allen next faces Chen Feilong. Former World Championship semifinalist Joe Perry beat Thailand’s James Wattana 4-0 but Peter Ebdon bowed out at the hands of fellow Englishman Alfie Burden, who won 4-2.

England’s Mark King bt Mei Xiwen of China 4-2 and Robert Milkins eased past Ireland’s Fergal O’Brien 4-0.

Anthony Hamilton and Dominic Dale were among the other first round winners yesterday.
