100 years ago

The Secretary of the War Office makes the following announcement: “Cases have been brought to notice of officers and soldiers who came from abroad to serve in the war having been demobilised without claiming free return passage to which they are entitled under certain conditions. Any officer or soldier, other than members of the Dominion and Colonial forces, discharging within the last six months, should request Army Form Z7 to be forwarded to them.

50 years ago

Nearly 300 families living in three multi-storey blocks of council flats near Ibrox, Glasgow, are to leave their homes “immediately”. Before the end of the week all the families will have been rehoused and workmen will start reinforcing the 21-storey blocks as required under new government regulations. Some weeks ago, gas cookers and some other gas fittings were disconnected. Now the gasoperated space heating is to be taken out and no gas supplied equipment will go back into the flats.

A Labour bid to keep Monifieth and Invergowrie within the Dundee City Council boundaries ran into stiff government opposition yesterday. The disagreement arose at a meeting of the All Party Commons Committee, set up to carry out a line-by-line scrutiny of the Tories’ controversial bill to reform local government in Scotland. Although all party MPs had been in no doubt that the future of Monifieth was “cut and dried” there was considerably less certainty about the government’s final decision on Invergowrie.

The mastermind behind Dundee’s new V&A building has described the museum as his “greatest achievement”. Kengo Kuma, who arrived in the city yesterday, was able to admire his design in its entirety for the first time after the building’s exterior was finally completed following three years of construction work. The Japanese architect and professor seemed in awe of the colossal curving structure as he calmly surveyed the incredible work done by engineers on the site.
