Pedestrian pronounced dead at the scene following late night collision

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was hit by a Royal Mail lorry as he walked along a dark Fife road.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the A823 (M) slip road between the M90 and Queensferry Road in Rosyth at around 12.40am on Saturday.

A 45-year-old man, who was believed to be walking in the direction of Dunfermline on the carriageway, was struck by the red DAF lorry. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed for more than six hours to allow for investigation work to be carried out.

A temporary closure was put in place for traffic leaving the M90 at Junction 2. The road reopened shortly after 7am.

A police spokesman said: “At around 12.40am on Saturday police and other emergency services attended a road traffic collision on the M823 Rosyth near to Junction 2. A 45-year-old male pedestrian sustained fatal injuries.”

Sergeant Dominic Doyle of the road policing unit added: “We are carrying out an investigation to establish the full circumstances and my thoughts are with the family of the man who died.

“We believe that he had been walking along the road towards Dunfermline but are keen to hear from anyone who was travelling in the area and might have seen him before the collision, or anyone else who may have witnessed the incident itself.”
