Two people have been charged after an alleged stabbing on the edge of Perth city centre at the weekend.

More than 10 police vehicles, including riot teams, blocked off Crieff Road and Viewfield Place from around 4pm on Sunday.

Emergency services stayed at the locked-down scene for hours, diverting the teatime traffic away from the blocks of flats and nearby parade of businesses.

Several officers and CID remained at the scene of the alleged serious assault yesterday morning as investigations continued, with part of the ladeside footpath and one of the blocks of flats still wrapped in police tape.

A police spokesperson said a 31-yearold man is recovering in Ninewells Hospital after being rushed to Dundee to be treated for serious injuries. Large crowds had gathered around the cordoned off area on Sunday evening and eyewitnesses reported that the man had been seen soaked in blood as paramedics attended to him. It is understood he suffered serious facial injuries.

The rapid response vehicle from Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance also attended the incident.

It was confirmed by police yesterday morning a 39-year-old man and a woman, aged 21, had been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

The man is expected to appear at Perth Sheriff Court today.

Local residents said the stretch of road between the roundabouts at Dunkeld Road and Feus Road was reopened to traffic both ways before 8pm and most of the shops reopened yesterday morning as usual.

Inspector Martin Pattie said: “I would like to thank members of the public for their co-operation and patience.

“This was a contained incident, there was no risk to the general public and investigations are continuing.”

Perth and Kinross councillor Peter Barrett said incidents of this nature were “rare” and that the event had “come as a severe shock to the community”.

Mr Barrett, who represents the Perth City Centre ward, added: “Residents can find assurance from the rapid response by our emergency services to make the area secure and to get the victim to hospital for treatment.

“This has been followed by the swift arrest of suspects.

“I want to thank the emergency services for their rapid response and mobilisation.”

I want to thank the emergency services for their rapid response and mobilisation. COUNCILLOR PETER BARRETT
