Sports broadcaster Jim Spence takes on university rector’s role

Courier columnist will return to his alma mater having graduated from Dundee in law in 1986

Scottish sports broadcaster Jim Spence has been elected as Dundee University’s new rector.

The Courier columnist will return to his alma mater having graduated in law from the university in 1986.

He will assume the role from August 1, the beginning of the next academic year, and was elected unopposed by students.

He follows round-the-world cyclist and adventurer Mark Beaumont, who was the previous rector, as well as other famous faces who have held the role in the past such as Stephen Fry.

Jim spoke of his shock upon hearing he had been nominated.

“I am more than a little surprised but feel deeply honoured to take on the role of rector at the University of Dundee,” said Jim.

“I have a strong connection to the university, having studied there, and as everyone who knows me would realise I am a passionate advocate for this great city of Dundee.

“I will do everything I can to help the students and the wider university community, of which I am proud to be a part.”

On succeeding names such as Beaumont and Fry, he added: “A lot of big shoes to fill and a lot of big saddles to fill too.

“Mark is a fascinating character, he’s got some incredible tales.

“He’s been round the world on a bike – I struggle to make it up the Perth Road on my bike.

“If I can do half the job that these sort of folk have done then I’ll count myself lucky.”

Jim was nominated for the role by Sean O’Connor, past president of Dundee University Students’ Association (DUSA) and a current student.

Sean said: “I was delighted when Jim agreed to run for rector and it is great news that he will now take on the role.

“Jim is well known for his work in sports broadcasting but as someone who also has a long background in education as a college lecturer he understands the issues that students and the education sector face.

“I am sure he will be a strong advocate for students and the university. He also provides yet another link between students, the university and our city.”

Jim will be formally installed as rector in a ceremony to be arranged for a later date.

The rector is elected to serve the students’ interests, including at the University Court, the governing body of the institution.
